The Origin of the Villa
The history of Capannelle started in 1974 when the businessman Raffaele Rossetti moved to a 16th century Villa surrounded by 10.5 hectares of land in Gaiole in Chianti, homeland to Chianti Classico.
After a deep analysis of the area and soil, a new vineyard of 3.5 hectares was planted using only local grapes such as Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino and Malvasia while two more hectares were planted with olive trees.
In the meantime, the Villa was undergoing renovation. Raffaele Rossetti decided to create a proper tasting room with original furniture including a masterpiece, a six-meter-long table, and a new modern kitchen where famous chefs have been pairing since then traditional and innovative recipes with Capannelle wines. A modern cellar was needed as well and it was built with cutting-edge technologies.
The first label was released in 1975: it was a Table Wine named simply Capannelle. Despite its “simplicity”, this wine was able to conquer the critics and market attention, becoming a symbol of quality, thanks to a careful management of vineyards and the use of modern technologies in the cellar. French oak barrels were introduced in wine aging in 1977 creating a style which would become a must in just a few years. White wine making was approached in 1986 and in 1988 Capannelle released its first white wine, a Chardonnay fermented and aged in barrel.

1988 stunning vintage gave Raffaele Rossetti the idea to blend Capannelle Sangiovese with a Tuscan Merlot. The meeting of Capannelle with Avignonesi, a historical winery in Montepulciano, made this dream come true with the creation of 50&50, a blend of the two wines. 1990 marked the creation of another great wine of Capannelle, Solare, to which contributed also Giorgio Pinchiorri, owner of the famous Enoteca Pinchiorri in Florence. The wine was finally released in 1996.
In the 1997 Capannelle was bought by James B. Sherwood, founder of the Orient Express Hotels, Train & Cruises (now Belmond Hotels) with the intention to make Capannelle a world renowned brand. Firstly, Mr sherwood decided to make the winery bigger, buying two more vineyards: “Il Trebbio” of 7 hectares and “Vertine” of 3 hectares. Along with this, the cellar was almost doubled in size, passing from initial 600 m2 to today’s 1050 m2.
Nowadays, the winery owns 35 hectares total, 16 of which are vineyards. Here are produced 5 different wines under the supervision of winemaker Simone Monciatti, who has been taking care of each vintage since 1984.
Capannelle wines are distributed in 35 countries all over the world and amongst our customers we have luxury hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants and top wine shops. The sales network is so divided: Italy (30%), export (30%) and private customers (10%).
Capannelle is not only a Winery but also a Wine Resort opened all year long with 5 full comfort rooms for even the most demanding client. The Wine Resort has also a panoramic pool, two living rooms with a fireplace, a wide terrace and an English-style garden overlooking Chianti Classico smooth hills.
